Submissions


Requirements:

A) Original Research Paper

In order for submissions to be considered for the printed publication, your paper must be:

  • Historically focused. Papers may be written for classes in departments other than History as long as they contain an argument that substantially analyzes historical evidence in support of its thesis. These departments include but are not limited to Latin American Studies, African and African American Studies, Asian Studies, Sociology, Political Science, and Religion.

  • 3000-7500 words (about 10-25 pages) in length

  • Double-spaced, 12 pt. font

  • Footnotes formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style with a bibliography included

  • Not previously published in any other journal

  • Written while an undergraduate student at Rice University.

B) Original Book Review

In order for submissions to be considered for the printed publication, your book review must be:

  • Historically focused. Papers may be written for classes in departments other than History as long as they contain an argument that substantially analyzes historical evidence in support of its thesis. These departments include but are not limited to Latin American Studies, African and African American Studies, Asian Studies, Sociology, Political Science, and Religion.

  • 500-1000 words (about 2-5 pages double-spaced) in length

  • Double-spaced, 12 pt. font

  • Footnotes formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style with a bibliography included

  • Not previously published in any other journal

  • Written while an undergraduate student at Rice University.

Submission Instructions:

  • Please remove all references to your name in the paper

  • Submit your paper as a .docx file attachment to historicalreview@rice.edu

  • Please submit illustrations, data, and other figures as separate files

  • Write "LF Submission: [Paper Title]” as the subject line

  • List your preferred name, email address, geographical and temporal frames of the paper, and the class and professor you wrote the paper for (if applicable) in the body
